In most cases, the blessing of
a child of God is hidden within their spiritual identity. In the case of Jesus’
disciples, Jesus changed Simon’s name to Peter so that he would be able to
understand and live out the great things of the Kingdom. This is why, as long
as our spiritual identity—our behavior, habits, lifestyle, and so on—has not
been transformed, it is difficult for us to take possession of our inheritance.
Note that Abraham had to leave
his father’s household and go to an unknown land in order to experience his
blessing. Likewise, we must leave certain people and things behind in order to
excel in divine grace. And if we do not do it ourselves, God will do it for us.
Often, however, He changes us through trials. Hey, don’t wait until you lose
the socket of your hip to do it!
If you don’t believe me, just
ask Jacob, and he will tell you! He had to wrestle with the angel of the Lord
that day in order to receive his blessing, because the angel knew that the name
Jacob carried the meaning of “deceiver” or “supplanter,” and that his
blessing was connected to his new identity: “Israel,” meaning “he
struggles with God” or “God strives.” For the identity of each
person often determines their character.
Read this:
He arose that same night and
took his two wives, his two female servants, and his eleven children, and
crossed the ford of the Jabbok.
He took them and sent them
across the stream, and he sent across all that he had. Jacob was left alone.
Then a man wrestled with him until the breaking of the day.
When the man saw that he could
not prevail against him, he touched the socket of Jacob’s hip; and the socket
of Jacob’s hip was dislocated as he wrestled with him.
And he said, “Let me go, for
the day has broken.” But Jacob said, “I will not let you go unless you bless
me.”
So he said to him, “What is
your name?” And he said, “Jacob.”
And he said, “Your name
shall no longer be called Jacob, but Israel; for you have struggled with God
and with men, and have prevailed.”
Then Jacob asked, saying,
“Tell me, please, Your name.” And He said, “Why is it that you ask My name?”
And He blessed him there.
So Jacob called the name of
the place Peniel, saying, “For I have seen God face to face, and my life
has been preserved.”
Just as he crossed over
Penuel, the sun rose on him, and he limped because of his hip.
